The Coromandel on Track – Huarahi Ora project is a proposed system of walkways throughout the upper Coromandel Peninsula from Manaia to the top of the peninsula on the western side and down to Whangapoua on the eastern side.
The project includes:
- old walkways that may be disused overgrown or lost will be re-opened;
- new walkways to link in with existing walkways;
- consultation with local iwi, community groups, landowners, DOC and any other affected parties;
- undertaking of other related planting and restoration projects in conjunction with Environment Waikato and Thames-Coromandel District Council; and
- coordination and administration of the project by CILT.
‘Huarahi’ means path or paths. ‘Ora’ references health and well-being for both the environment and people. The combination of these two words signify the many paths (walkways) be they tangible or intangible that will be established by this project and will promote and enhance the protection of the environment and help improve the health and well-being of the people that use them.
Coromandel On Track’s coordinator is Mike Noonan who can be contacted on 07 866 8358 or cilt@cilt.org.nz.
